Technical Assistance Brief: ESSA and Accountability

In December, 2015, President Obama signed the “Every Student Succeeds Act” (ESSA) which reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and replaces the No Child Left Behind Act. In response to a specific informational request from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, this technical assistance brief summarizes ESSA’s accountability requirements. It also provides brief overview of Pennsylvania’s current accountability system, a summary of current accountability measures used by states with an example of an accountability framework used by California CORE Districts. It also provides an overview of the requirements for evidence-based interventions with examples of Pennsylvania resources. It concludes with key considerations for states.
